Curriculum
If you would like information about the subjects taught then please read this page, but also do not hesitate to contact the school if you want any more information, or speak to your child's class teacher.
Phonics
All children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 have daily phonics sessions. Phonics is the way that children are taught to read.
We use ALS Phonics as the basis of our phonics teaching.
Reading
St Barnabas Primary School aims to foster confident, articulate children who have a love of reading. Linked with the phonics teaching, children throughout the school use books and stories as the basis of their learning.
All children get to change their home reading books as often as they want and have a home school diary for parents to record every time they listen to their child read.
We follow a reading approach developed in school with input from local authority reading consultants and supported by our phonics teaching.
Maths
We have embraced the mastery approach to teaching maths. This means that children are taught using carefully selected models and images to support their learning. Their lessons are carefully structured to move in very small steps, and to include a variety of ways of presenting the maths. Our overall aim is for children to keep up with the maths for their year group and not fall into a position of catch-up.
We use White Rose Maths as the basis of our maths teaching.
